Document Summary

First wave feminism http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=hxbjpw9ahk (bbc, 2011 - 8min) Transpiring in the late 19th and early 20th century. Primarily (in english speaking countries like the uk and us) focused on legal rights: women"s suffrage (ie voting rights, property and marriage rights) Some argues that women were actually morally superior to men. These women (mostly belonging to middle and upper classes) were quite conservative e. g. ) didn"t waste family money on drinks at the pub, stayed loyal to their partners (didn"t sleep around etc. ) Key theorists: mary wollstonecraft, who wrote a vindication of the rights of women (1792), susan b. anthony, etc. Driven by middle-class, western (and white) women. Began in the 1960s and continues into the 1980s. Was transpiring at the same time as civil rights, anti-war and sexual revolution movements. The second-wave of feminism broadened to include non-white women as well as lower- class women and non-heterosexual women (although not necessarily happily)
