MGMT20001 Lecture 10: Week 10
Document Summary
Power is the capacity to influence the behaviour of others. That is, power has to be exercised to influence outcomes. Power and politics can be positive or negative connotations. Power can be utilised overtly and covertly to influence workers. Using power: politically unaware & self-interested = inept, politically aware & self-interested = machiavellian, politically aware & common interest = wise, politically unaware & common interest = naive. First dimension - managing resources: the deliberate use of resources ( power bases ) to defeat conflict overtly or at least confront resistance directly. Essentially, first dimension is based on control of resources on which others depend. Bachrach & baratz found that power can be exercised subtly and indirectly. Second dimension - changing processes: the use of processes to sideline conflict, making the use of power less visible. Rules of the game are shaped so that outcomes play out in our favour.
