MGMT20001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Motivation, Positive Psychology, Job Satisfaction
Document Summary
Define motivation as the degree of persistent effort directed towards a goal. Amount of effort someone put into achieving a work related goal. Direction (e. g. ) it"s aimed at achieving a goal. We assume that legitimate goals are those that relate to managerially desirable outcomes (e. g. ) workplace performance. Content theories investigate what motivates a person needs, intrinsic. Process theories investigate how people think about motivation impact of expectancy and equity on behaviour. Maslow"s reaction against behaviourism was to insist that human actions are motivated by certain universal needs. We pursue a need if we think it"s in deficit. Once satisfied, we move on to pursue another need. Needs can be arranged in a hierarchy of importance. Research was not based on a representative sample of the population. What about people who trade-off security for self-actualisation. Little evidence that people are consciously pursuing needs in the way maslow thought (e. g. ) cultural differences.
