Week 3 readings: the relation of habitual thought and behaviour to language, the collected. Ten days cannot be objectively experienced; we can only experience one day at a time. The other nine are something conjured up from memory or imagination. Our awareness of time and cyclicity contains something immediate and subjective- the basic sense of becoming later and later. Our tongue makes no distinction between numbers counted on discrete entities and numbers that are simply concepts counting itself . In hopi , plurals are used only for entities that form or can form an objective group. Hence, expressions such as ten days are not used, but rather, they stayed until the eleventh day as an equivalent to the sentence.
