PHYS30005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Reuptake, Groupon, Cachexia
Document Summary
Lifespan/health span extension is possible by targeting detrimental effects of ageing, including healthy lifestyle and actionable/drug-treatable molecular targets. Sarcopenia = age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Individuals tend to lose muscle mass at a rate of 1-2% per year after 50. Causes are multifactorial disuse, changing endocrine function, chronic diseases, inflammation, insulin resistance, nutritional deficiencies. Cachexia may be a component of sarcopenia but they are not the same thing. Diagnosis (of sarcopenia) should be considered in all older patients with observed declines in physical function, strength or overall health.
