Aetiology: biological, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis involvement stress response system, neurobiological factors, gate-control theory a model of pain, trauma. Learned illness behaviour: social learning theory, environmental factors, reinforcing illness behaviour during adulthood secondary gain like care and attention. Lower ses dysthymia, panic etc: social stress, reinforcing social factors such as illness benefits.
