Definition of somatic symptom disorders: dsm 5 common feature of all disorders in this chapter the prominence of somatic symptoms associated with significant distress and impairment, mental disorders that take the form of physical disorders. Currently one of the least seen disorder groups in clinical practice in psychology: more likely to be seen by gps, neurologists or clinical neuropsychologists. (cid:862)do(cid:272)tor shoppi(cid:374)g(cid:863) psychological distress via physical symptoms in western cultures. Aetiology: biological, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis involvement stress response system, neurobiological factors, gate-control theory a model of pain, trauma. Learned illness behaviour: social learning theory, environmental factors, reinforcing illness behaviour during adulthood secondary gain like care and attention. Lower ses dysthymia, panic etc: social stress, reinforcing social factors such as illness benefits.
