Document Summary
Three-component model proposed by baddeley and hitch (1974), comprising of a control system (central executive) and two storage components (sketchpad and loop) Phonological loop: phonological store that can hold memory traces for a few seconds before they fade. Limited capacity because articulation takes place in real time. As the number of items being rehearsed increases, a point is reached at which the first item will have faded before the latest item can be rehearsed: digit span task. Read aloud to participants a series of digits. Ranging from 2 items to 9 items in a set. 3 sets of items at different levels. The first level at which all 3 sets are recalled wrongly performance level of working memory. Most people get 6 +/- 1 items right. Evokes anxiety more likely to make mistakes; slower processing speed: backwards digit span task. Same procedure, except that participants have to recall digits in the backwards order.
