Intensive caging system: after jan 2001- where there was 3 or more hens in a cage and less than. 2. 4kg per they need 550 square meters each: pullet- young hen, reared to hatching 16 weeks of age, small mortality 2-3% during this time. In most production systems- often culled at about 68 weeks of age. Cage systems: 3-5 birds per cage, one on top of each other, waste falls through grill and taken away feed and water automatically supplied. In an environment controlled barn on conveyor belt: eggs taken away on conveyor belt, cage floor- mesh like. Free range system: there is a hen house consisting of open barn with pop holes- hens can come out and explore the range.
