The heart is the first organ to develop in utero. It is in its fully mature form at 10 weeks. It is the lateral folding that brings the endocardial tubes together in the midline, so we have 2 tubes at the midline. The fusions of the tubes are broken away by apoptosis, where we end up with 1 round tube. Cardinal = drain the head and the trunk. Umbilical = bring oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood to and from the placenta. By day 21, we see constrictions of the heart tube, where the heart divides into 3 regions. The heart is the first organ that is asymmetrical. It becomes important to circulate the blood throughout the embryo. Foramen primum = large opening between l atrium and r atrium. Pressure in the ra builds up and becomes so high that it pushes up. The individual doesn"t end up getting enough oxygenated blood.
