Anzac = australian and new zealand army corps. Commemorates the landings at gallipoli on 25 april 1915. According to peter stanley (war historian) it represents the place and time when australia became a nation. World war i (1914-1918) came only 13 years after federation. Settlers in australia saw themselves as british subjects/citizens. Very little question that australia would follow the british into war. Thousands of young men signed up to fight following the british declaration of war. Diverted to egypt to train due to lack of accommodation/facilities in britain. Also could protect british interests in egypt including the suez canal. Only one submarine (australian) managed to get through the minefields in the. Dardanelles but it broke down and they were captured. Wanted land soldiers to take down the guns and minefields so the navy could move in and capture istanbul. Wanted the ottoman empire out of the war.
