Intersex individuals: 1-4% of live births are inersex - infants have anatomical, chromosonal, or hormonal sexual variation from what is considered normal" and characteristic of the vast majority of the population. In 1950s, intersex babies were assigned a gender identity by doctors, and parents were advised to treat them accordingly. In 1990s, with formation of intersex society, treatment of intersex births emerged as an activist issue. Demanded societal acceptance of gender ambiguity and demonstrated against what they saw as arbitrary gender assignment and unnecessary surgical correction": transgender individuals: persons who change gender identity. Cultural images of latinas depict them as submissive to their men: asian americans and gender: the image of asian women as subordinate to men in patriarchal households was not always the reality. Black couples experience and prefer high levels of role flexibility and power sharing, a situation that enhances their relationship.
