ATS1309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Anthropocentrism
Document Summary
Population change is non-linear & is geographically uneven (not linear over time and not even over space) driven by interactions between fertility, mortality & migration over time & space. Australia is large & rich in resources (mineral, pastoral, agricultural & timber) need for people to harness resources in order to drive economic growth. Migration will aid in this as migrants are concentrated in the working age populations. Thus: australia doesn"t have to pay for healthcare and education of people before they enter the workforce, australia doesn"t have to pay for age care as migrants will return home before they get old. Migrants often compliment the skills of native workforce (do jobs local people can"t/don"t want to do) Australia has a limited carrying capacity limited ability to sustainably absorb more population. Habitable portion of australia is small and thus can"t be overpopulated. Cities are too congested not enough infrastructure to sustain population growth.
