Document Summary
Lecture 15 | global burden of chronic infection. Explain why the global burden of infection is spread unequally amongst different regions of the world. Recognise the difference between a chronic infection and an acute infection. Describe the pathogenesis of the major chronic infectious disease covered in this section. Identify the basis of vaccination and how immunity can be acquired both actively and passively. Infection: invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in body tissues, especially that causes local cellular injury due to competitive metabolism, Chronic: long duration, of the order of weeks or months. Acute: short duration, of the order of several days. Primary pathogen: the presence of this pathogen causes the disease and their intrinsic virulence. Opportunistic pathogen: requires a depressed immune response (e. g. tb) Easy transmission, communicable disease, by an ill persons secretions (e. g. influenza) Vaccination: physical injection of the inactivated or weakened pathogen.
