Early positivist theory was influenced by the ideas of darwin such as evolution --> early criminologists were focused on the idea that criminals are less evolved than non criminals which was their starting assumption. Fundamental assumption that there is a distinction between the. Normal" and the deviant", and attempts to study the specific factors that give rise to deviant or criminal behavior. Positivists want to use scientific approaches to understand what it is that makes people commit crime when most people don"t. Defines crime as a natural phenomenon meaning that from a positivist tradition, there"s belief that offending is in some people"s nature which has an implication about the nurture vs nature debate.
