FIT2002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Project Plan, Scope Statement, Requirements Management
• Scope – all work involved in creating the products of the project and processes used to
create them
• Six main processes of project scope management:
o Planning scope – deteiig ho pojet’s sope ad euieets ill e
managed
o Collecting requirements
o Defining scope – reviewing project charter, requirements documents, organisational
process assets to create scope statement
o Creating WBS
o Validating scope
o Controlling scope
• Planning scope management – team uses expert judgement and meetings to develop scope
management plan and requirements management plan.
• Requirements management plan documents how project requirements will be analysed,
documented, and managed.
• Scope management plan – subsidiary of project management plan. Describes:
o How to prepare project scope statement
o How to create WBS
o How to maintain and approve WBS
o How to obtain formal acceptance of completed project deliverables
o How to control requests for changes to project scope
• Scope statement – describes characteristic of products that project should delivery.
• Methods for collecting requirements:
o Interviewing
o Focus groups/facilitated workshops
o Group creativity/decision-making techniques
o Questionnaires/surveys
o Observation
o Prototyping
o Benchmarking
• Requirements traceability matrix – table that lists requirements, attributes, status of
requirements.
• WBS – deliverable-oriented grouping of work involved in a project which defines the total
scope of the project.
• Task at lowest level of WBS is called work package.
• Scope baseline – includes approved project scope statement and associated WBS with
dictionary.
• WBS can be tabular, or organised by project management process groups.
• Approaches to developing WBS:
o Guidelines
o Analogy
o Top-down approach
o Bottom-up approach
o Mind-mapping
• Scope validation involves formal acceptance of completed project deliverables.
• Goals of scope control:
