PHY3181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Secondary Sex Characteristic, Tanner Scale, Gonadarche
Document Summary
The transformation from a child to an adult. Transition from sexual immaturity to fertility during which secondary sexual characteristics develop. 9/04/2018: progressive activation of the hpg axis, progressive development of secondary sexual characteristics under influence of endocrine signalling. Reproduction is possible once full activation of reproductive signalling is achieved - typically at the end of puberty. Spermarche/semenarche: development of mature sperm in the male ejaculate. Stages of puberty: tanner scale: stage 1 = pre-pubertal or infantile, stages 2-4 = intermediate stages of development, stage 5 = complete adult development. Penis is small - 3cm or less. Skin on scrotum thins, reddens + enlarges. Penis length same - 3cm or less. First sign of puberty = testicular volume 4mls, slight increase in scrotal folds + pigmentation. An orchidometer is a medical instrument used to measure testicular volume. No glandular tissue: areola follows skin contours of chest. Breast bud forms + small area of surrounding glandular tissue areola begins to widen.
