Document Summary
"abnormal psychology" is the study of abnormal thoughts, feelings and behaviours. -each d as being on a continuum from normal to abnormal. Deviance--most obvious if a person"s behaviour does not confirm to the majority and instead deviates from expected standards (or is statistically infrequent) it is possibly abnormal - depending on whether the individual meets other indicators that suggest abnormality. Distress it can be difficult to ascertain whether a person is experiencing distress, because it is not necessarily visible or observable. Subjective feelings of pain, anxiety, agitation, or loss of appetite are unlikely to be seen by an observer, for instance. People who are diagnosed with some form of mental disorder may feel entirely miserable and distressed, yet they may appear normal on the surface. If a thought, feeling or behaviour is interfering with an individual"s daily functioning (considering their typical personal level of functioning) then it may be considered abnormal.
