SCI1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Great Ocean Road, Sea Level Rise, Global Frequency
Document Summary
Heat waves: decrease efficiency of electrical transmission, affect nuclear energy plants, buckle train & tram lines, and roads. Compare impacts and responses of climate change on agriculture infrastructure: agriculture, annual crops, flexibility (change cultivars etc) Infrastructure: design and build to last decades, very expensive to retrofit, very expensive to replace if destroyed. What causes sea level rise: expansion of sea water from warming, melting alpine glaciers, melting polar glaciers, melting greenland & antarctica, melting sea ice (does not increase sea level) Ipcc tropical cyclone projections: average tropical cyclone maximum wind speed likely to increase, not necessarily everywhere, global frequency of tropical cyclones likely to decrease or remain essentially unchanged, heavy rainfall associated with tropical cyclones likely to increase. Increased maintenance costs e. g. weakened road surfaces, including rutting and cracking. Increased disruption to services: sea level rise in coastal communities affecting infrastructure, and resulting in higher insurance premiums and, in some cases, relocation.
