Week 8 cloud computing
What is cloud computing?
In simple terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs
over the Internet instead of from your computer’s hard drive
“Cloud computing refers to both the applications delivered as services over the
Internet and the hardware and systems software in the data centres that provide
those services.” – from A View of Cloud Computer (refer to readings list)
Software as a service
Issues
It may not easily integrated into software already being used internally by the
business
It can improve security - offsite data backup, service providers will usually invest
heavily in security which an individual business cannot do
Reputable service provider – do not want the provider going out of business
Monthly fees but are there any hidden costs
Platform as a service
PaaS
Provides a platform and environment to allow developers to build applications and
services over the internet
Hosted in the cloud and accessed by users via their web browser
Benefits include:
Not having to invest in actual infrastructure and able to “rent” virtual
infrastructure
With some PaaS offerings, you do not need development skills to develop
applications (eg. WordPress)
Flexibility – users can pick and choose what features they want
Can have a team around the world work on an application build
Security – data security, backup and recovery
Infrastructure as a service
IaaS
