Week 1 concerned with the systematic presentation and explanation of particular legal doctrines and is therefore referred to as the "expository" tradition in legal research. The 7 components of the legal research process are : Your initial attempt at identifying material facts will often need some refining as the research process progresses. The facts should help to identify the broad area of law involved. Might be using basic secondary sources like textbooks, or a legal dictionary to define key words. Help to identify what possible materials can be involved in a particular area of law. Issues are key questions which need to be answered in order to solve the overall problem. Usually, these will be the elements required in the cause of action, any potential defences, and what remedies are available. Larger issues might be then broken into smaller sub-issues. Using the facts and issues, come up with possible keywords which you can use for browsing or searching.
