Researching: synthesise from two sources
Key features of service learning:
o Building relationships with other persons in the organisation - connect with others and
learn from them
o Building relationships with the community - get out into your local community
o Service to the community - make a difference; contribute to social justice goals
o Structure preparation (assignment 1 and 2) - explore your own views, beliefs and goals
o Reflection - what does this all mean for you as a teacher? As a citizen?
Reflecting - think critically about the experience and how they relate/contradict/outline what
the literature says
o Is the student really treated in a way that suits his/her needs?
Requirements from the Melbourne Declaration and think aout why aye teahers a’t
provide the inclusive environment, why this student has to be excluded. Does it mean the
school doesn't have enough human resources? The teacher doesn't feel confident? The peers
aren't ready to respond, teacher hasn't worked on social relationships?

Will develop better understanding of diversity in our society and the inequities perpetuated in
schools and in society; more empathy and greater respect for diversity and people's
differences and needs

o Think about the kind of teacher you want to be
Expectations in service learning:
15 hrs service
Introductory visit (about 1 hr)
Keep a diary of activities as well as observations and reflections
