1980"s : deindustrialisation of cities in developed countries resulted because inflation, increasing globalisation etc. Changes in employment structure: decline of manufacturing jobs and growth of employment in service sector, strong growth in occupations such as managers, professionals but decline of tradespersons, women entering labour force. Increased labour force participation of women, decline in full time jobs and growth in part time jobs. Global competition: cities competing with one another, cities as urban entrepreneurs attracting mega- projects, investments. Formation of global system of cities - cities are acting as entrepreneurs to attract international investors (international appeal) Factors leading to the post-modern city: demographic changes (fertility, migration) and changes in population structure (aging pop) and composition. Formation of a global system of world cities: restructuring of the economic base of most cities, changing social structures, radical restructuring of urban form e. g. rise of the carceral city + privatisation of public spaces.
