LECTURE 1
WHAT IS ECOLOGY?
the study of interactions between organisms and their environment
Primarily the study of the relationships, distribution (where are they) and abundance (how
many of them there are) of organisms, or groups of organisms in an environment
understanding the distribution and abundance of different organisms and then
understanding why they're changing, what are the drivers in those changes and how do
those drivers interact with some things that humans have control over
NATURAL SELECTION- CHARLES DARWIN 1859
The environment favours some individuals with certain genotypes to survive better in
certain habitats
So the selection of organisms over time helps us understand why some plants and animals
and other organisms happen to be where they are and some of the things that underpin
their success or otherwise
"survival of the fittest", where fitness is the way in which individuals contribute to that
secies and its success in the future. How the individual ensures that future generations have
those genotypic aspects that are passed on that make them fitter for their environment. The
same species can have different populations with different genotypes (fragmented
populations over time evolve differently???)
ENVIRONMENT
Intrinsic to an organism (internal environment??)-> physiology, body requirements,
behaviour
Extrinsic to an organism (external environment??)->
o abiotic (not biological) resources - light, temperature, water, topography (how do
these change the habitat for an organism?)
o biotic factors (biological influences) - food availability, predators, competitors, mates
(importantly humans are a biological influence but we tend to separate human
impacts from others)
what is a habitat and how does it vary in terms of different species (e.g. an ant environment
is different to a fruit bat environment)
spatial and temporal variability (how do things change in different parts of the world and
how do they change over time)
RESOURCES FOR SPECIES
anything used by an organism
o minerals used by plants
o plants used as nesting material
o plants as food for birds
NICHE- SPECIES' HABITAT REQUIREMENTS
e.g. water holding frogs, red kangaroo
