ABORIGINAL EDUCATION - guest speakers
• Objective - to gain a better understanding of how to engage with the
Aboriginal community in your school
• Ab. education is for all, not just Ind. community - importance of making sure
your students are receiving the right information
• Our Aboriginal community (in Sydney) is Eora\
• Why engage with aboriginal education? It ensure Indigenous people
participate as equals, it is essential in developing meaningful Indigenous
perspectives and studies across curriculums, it builds stronger
community/cultural relationships
• ORGANISATIONS RESOURCES - Lands councils and AECG
• Importance/significance of targeting transition points in Indigenous education
in providing opportunities, help, and resources
Language
• Until 1967 it was illegal to speak Aboriginal languages and perform
dance/music/culture - otherwise children would be taken away
• Preferred terms - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
• Less preferred but still acceptable - Indigenous
• DO NOT USE “Aborigine”
Understanding Aboriginal culture
• “We know we cannot live in the past, but the past lives in us” - Charles
Perkins
• Until 1972 it was at teacher’s discretion to kick a student out of school purely
because they were Indigenous
