Ovaries have two zones: outer cortex (containing follicles in different stages of development, central medulla with blood vessels + nerves in a dense connective tissue stroma. Uterus consists of 3 layers: endometrium (inner glandular layer, myometrium (middle, smooth muscular layer, perimetrium (outer serosa) Simple columnar, ciliated and non- ciliated peg cells. Entire cervix divided into upper portion (cervical canal) and lower portion. Cervical canal contains: nabothian glands (can become blocked and turn into cysts, pilcae palmatea (deep branching folds) During pregnancy, cervix forms a mucous plug to prevent sperm/microorganisms from entering uterus. Epithelial cells have glycogen, which are acted by lactobacillus acidophilus to produce vaginal acidity. Lamina propria contains elastic fibres + lymph nodes + venous plexus (filled with blood during sexual stimulation) Vagina is fibromuscular, consisting of: mucosa, muscularis (has smooth muscle layers continuous with myometrium of uterus, adventitia (contains elastic fibres, blood vessels, nerves. These cells are partially surrounded by myoepithelial cells.
