A bipolar world: average greek city-state: population 400-900 male citizens, area = 50-100km2, two exceptions: Athens (population = 200,000 (50,000 citizens); area = 2650km2. The conquest of laconia (creation of the perioikoi: perioikoi (the people that live around us, not a spartan invention. Settlements also found at argos, crete, elis, thessaly, the product of a "plan culture": perioikoi worked for the state: Serve in the army, pay taxes, mixing of estates, religious duties, included amongst the trophimioi ("nursed") in the agoge.
