Document Summary

Part 1: geomorphology & stratigraphy: course-grained sediment = movement (e. g. high-energy movement of waves to move sand/gravel). Fine-grained sediments (clay or silt) = low energy movement as there is insufficient energy to transport larger clasts. In moving water, clay won"t settle/be deposited on bottom: degree of sorting: frequency with which particles of the same size occur (lots of tiny pebbles. Acidic (low ph <7) e. g. rainwater leaching calcium, magnesium, potassium; co2 from decomposing organic matter & root respiration dissolving in water. Alkaline (high ph >7) e. g. limestone/calcareous substrate; shell middens = high calcium carbonate content. Summary: characteristics of sediments (colour, texture, chemistry, location) tell us about: Mechanism by which it has been deposited: helps us understand. Layer of homogenous or gradational material- deposited by the same mechanism (strata = plural) Represents a sheet of material that covers the surface on which it rests. The superposition of one layer on top of another.
