Document Summary
Lecture 11 gender/race differences and human growth/development. Growth in height and weight: first 1000 days of life loads of growth, from 2 until puberty growth is slow (5-6cm/2. 5kg each year, peak height velocity occurs at puberty. Adolescent growth spurt (2 year period) - if stay on same projected growth: boys: add 20kg and 20cm, girls: add 16kg and 16cm. Gender differences in structural growth patterns: small differences until adolescent growth spurt. Differential timing: general curve - whole body development, neural (develops very early) - central nervous system, brain and skull, genitals (slow growth until puberty, fully developed by 20) - reproductive. Lymphoid (peaks around 12) - immune system system, secondary sex characteristics. Phv - lean - bone: peak in muscle after phv, 6 months on, bone accrual peaks, strength follows about one year after phv. Increase up to phv while bones are rapidly growing: peak around phv then come back down as muscles and bones become stronger.
