DENT3060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Atheroma, Inflammation, Atherosclerosis
Document Summary
Foci of sepsis thought to be responsible for variety of inflammatory diseases. Largest single cause of death in aus, most costly (stroke 2nd largest) Atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, stroke: atherosclerosis: large medium sized muscular & large elastic arteries, causes: chd (angina), myocardial infarction (heart attack & cerebral infarction (stroke, arteriosclerosis atherosclerosis atheroma. Risk factors: classic (hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking) accounts for most incidence, pd may account for portion of remaining unknown: genetic: lipid metabolism, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, >fibrinogen, environmental: smoking, ses, stress, diet, chronic disease. Multiple studies show >risk cvd in pd pts few prospective studies, is it covariance? (non causal marker not likely to need tx) Association not causality: consistency/strength/specificity of association, time sequence correct, dose-response effect, biological plausibility, experimental support. Intervention studies: effect of pd tx investigated in relation to markers of systemic inflammation. & incidence of cardiac events: pd tx improves measures of endothelial dysfunction & carotid atherosclerosis.
