DENT3060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Periodontal Abscess, Pericoronitis, Gingival And Periodontal Pocket
Document Summary
Clinical condition of rapid onset involving periodontium & associated structures, usu. associated with pain/discomfort/infection. May be associated with gingivitis/periodontitis: periodontitis-related abscess, non-periodontitis-related abscess e. g. foreign body impaction. Gingival abscess: localised, painful, rapidly expanding lesion involving marginal gingiva or interdental papilla in previously healthy sites. Periodontal abscess: (acute/chronic) localised accumulation of pus in gingival wall of periodontal pocket, results in destruction of collagen fibre attachment & loss of nearby alveolar bone. Pericoronal abscess: localised accumulation of pus within overlying gingival flap surrounding crown of incompletely erupted tooth. Periodontitis-related abscess: imbalance between host defence & bacterial quality/quantity: marginal closure of deep periodontal pocket, lack of proper drainage, exacerbation of chronic lesion, untreated periodontitis, recurrent infection/inflammation due to deep pockets. Post-therapy periodontal abscess: post-scaling periodontal abscess: push calculs into pockets, incomplete debridement, post-surgery periodontal abscess: incomplete removal of subgingival calculus/foreign bodies in periodontal tissue e. g. sutures, regenerative devices, post-antibiotic periodontal abscess: a/b only treatment without adequate debridement.
