Week 9 – Gender
Boys and Girls education:
• Tend to disappear
• On average 17% less pay then women
• STEM-qualified men are less likely to be jobless
• Male-dominated image of certain professions (such as the scientist)
• Connections open to every individual student
• Have more of a focus on the learning, social outcomes and schooling experience

• Aptitude is not gendered – differed across the domains – clear pattern of achievement gaps
• Not the individual but how the gendering plays out
• Fear of teaching in primary school because of the stigma – social structure
Gender definations:
• LGBTQI – Lesbain, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questiong, Intersex
• Learnt as a social process
• Italian men cried the most – modern men cry more than their fathers
• Gender as a social construction

Diversity in Schools:
• Curriculum promotes inclusivity, avoid making generalities,
• Student may use a preferred name
• Safe Schools – safe, supportive and respectful – equitable learning experience
• Schools accept this responsibility in maintaining this community

o Policies and procedures
o Professional learning
o Positive behaviour management
o Engagement, skill and SS curriculum
o Student wellbeing
• Children able to talk about experiences – reachout.com and bullyingnoway.gov.au
• Safe schools been very controversial – educational sound and robust
• Government changes went past these changes – focusing on the aims
• Providing guidance for parents of LGBTQI students
• Official guidance, outlining expectations
• Clear communication
• Drop in suicides and a drop in bullying – teachers free to talk about the situation
