EDUC2716 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Concept Map, Functional Fixedness, Metacognition
Week 9 Lecture
Metacognition:
ď‚·Thinking about thinking
ď‚·Have prior experiences but differ from one student to the next
ď‚·Cultural capital from like making a difference to understanding
ď‚·Knowing about the best strategies for success
ď‚·Understanding when understanding
ď‚·Connected to self-regulated learning
3 basic stages – planning, monitoring and evaluating
Goals and objectives:
Goals – more they will already know where they are going
Objectives – derived from goals but more specific
Monitoring:
ď‚·Meta-level awareness of tasks
Self-explanation of give and take – assess their own competence
“The thinking about how we think about thinking”
Meta-level awareness of tasks – questions asked about how to succeed
Monitoring through Argumentation:
ď‚·Guided by teachers and statements
ď‚·Does not happen by itself
ď‚·Initiate the thinking process
ď‚·Come to a mutual agreement
ď‚·Enables deeper knowledge of a concept
ď‚·Must be seen as part of the process
Monitoring through Collaborative Reasoning:
ď‚·Construct arguments based on key questions
ď‚·Collaboratively constructed
ď‚·Decide on the direction of the discussion
Problem solving:
IDEAL – Identify, Define, Explore, Action, Look back

Document Summary
Have prior experiences but differ from one student to the next. Cultural capital from like making a difference to understanding. 3 basic stages planning, monitoring and evaluating. Goals more they will already know where they are going. Objectives derived from goals but more specific. Self-explanation of give and take assess their own competence. The thinking about how we think about thinking . Meta-level awareness of tasks questions asked about how to succeed. Must be seen as part of the process. Decide on the direction of the discussion. Ideal identify, define, explore, action, look back. Obstacles functional fixedness with a set response, fear of failure and focus on correct answer". Transfer applying strategies, positive and negative transfer (low and high road transfer), embedding tasks in real world situations, transfer of knowledge and the strategies of how you got there. Dual coding info presented in 2 different ways and remembered better and stronger for the memory.
