Document Summary

Lecture 5 understanding exercise adherence and nonadherence. Adherence behaviour that is consistent, with agreed on, expected, desired, or predetermined standards. Exercise adherence performed exercise doses per specified time period. Reasons for adopting and maintaining exercise may differ. E. g. , people may start exercise to lose weight but may maintain exercise because of the friends they exercise with. Categories of adherence: adherence = >80, nonadherence = <20% People can be intentionally nonadherent or accidentally non-adherent. Make up: motivation a process that drives behaviour. Fear is not a good motivator: too little fear means the person is complacent, too much fear means the person is frozen, attitudes to change. If clients think change is hard nonadherence is likely. If clients think change is easy adherence is likely. Exercise costs and benefits will influence people"s adherence: the costs of exercise are more powerful than benefits in determining adherence or nonadherence. Timeframes: people like to see gains in a short timeframe, knowledge.
