Promoting adherence is just as important as exercise programming. Action plan what, how, where, when, with whom. Collaborative action planning giving the client autonomy. Confidence planning may change across time and context. Give people specific feedback and show them their progress. Acknowledge and respect the costs and risks. Work with the context and challenges of the client: be on their side and be flexible to support them. Identify and create opportunities (structured and unstructured: appropriate infrastructure and resources, maximise convenience: accessibility, availability, time, location, maximise comfort and aesthetics: clean, attractive, provide cues and prompts, protect (physical and interpersonal) safety. Informational support (e. g. , professional advice: emotional support (e. g. , highlight progress and gains, network support (e. g. , monitor group dynamics, tangible support (e. g. , provide relevant resources) People may feel pain, discomfort, or have side-effects of exercise, and we need to be aware of these. Plan for relapses and have realistic expectations and self-forgiveness. If people feel positive about exercise, then adherence will increase.
