• Confidence and boasting

• Apologies
• Feedback
• Compliments
• Ritual opposition
• Managing up and down

Computer-Mediated Communication
• Does communicating electronically differ from communicating face-to-face?
● Information richness is the information-carrying capacity of different
communication mediums.
● face-to-face: high in richness. The sender is personally present. There
is audio, visual, body language and verbal language as well as
immediate feedback to the sender.
● phone conversation: fairly rich. Limited to only the audio channel.
● communicating through numeric computer output: lacks richness. Is
impersonal and uses only numeric language. Feedback may be very
slow.
Rich face-to-face communication is very important to create a synergy of ideas.

• We are not going to take a test today Could e:
• Statement indicating surprise
• Statement of fact
• Statement indicating that we will be doing something other than
taking a test today
• Statement indicating some other group will be taking a test today
• Statement indicating we absolutely will not be taking a test today
• Statement indicating that we will have more than one test today

• Information richness refers to the potential information-carrying capacity of a
communication medium.
Two important dimensions of information richness: *important
