4. Watch the video ‘Resistance Training’ and read chapter 16
‘Resistance Training’ of the Porcari textbook before completing
the following activities:
Describe how muscles adapt to a resistance training program and list the
health benefits of resistance training.
The body responds by altering its physiological structures:
- Increases in muscle size and strength
Health benefits include:
- Improved physical function
- Aesthetic appearance & body composition
- Metabolic increase
- Reduced risk for injury and chronic disease,
Define muscular strength and muscular endurance.
- Muscular strength: Maximal amount of force that can be generated by a muscle
under a specific set of conditions.
- Muscular endurance: The ability of the muscle to repeatedly develop and sustain
near maximal forces.
Describe the difference between concentric and eccentric muscle actions.
Concentric = muscle shortens during contraction
Eccentric = muscles lengthen during contraction
Define the term sarcopenia and describe the reasons why it occurs.
Sarcopenia = The loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength as a result of ageing
Causes:
- Major factor is ageing
- Reduced levels anabolic hormones such as Testosterone and Human Growth
Hormone (HGH)
- Lower activity levels with age.
Explain how men and women respond differently to a resistance training
program.
Men:
- More Testosterone and HGH leading to more muscle hypertrophy.
- Tend to have more type 2 muscle fibers causing more strength in short high intense
bursts of activity.
Women:
