Liberalism Notes
Core Liberal Beliefs
• A natural right of individuals is freedom as it leads to good consequences
• Individualism – prioritise and preservation of the individual
• Reason – the individual is so highly regarded because we can reason
• Freedom comes from a combination of individualism and their ability to reason
• Equal Rights
• Separation of powers
• Political Consent – Social contract
• Limited government
• Free Markets – capitalism, leave people to develop their own wealth
Liberal Democracy
• People can make their own rational decisions i.e. vote
Classical Liberalism
• The government is not your parent or your spouse – people are capable
of making their own decisions
• civil liberties under the rule of law with an emphasis on economic
freedom.
• Individual economic freedom benefits everyone
Neoliberalism/economic rationalism
• Favours capitalism and the free market – world market as each region
can make something the cheapest i.e. Italy making wine
• Deregulation and privatisation – i.e. postal service, tertiary education,
etc.
• A critique of social liberalism – the state has too much power
• Freedom to choose
• Individual responsibility and freedom
• Uses safety ets differetly
• Negative freedom – freedom from external constraints
Social Liberalism
• Welfare/safety net
• Free education
• Healthcare
• Market regulation – power, water, land
• Freedom to live a good life
• Arose from classical liberalism
