Culture
Culture varies for each person
It could be the love of art and food
It could also be the full range of learned human behaviour patterns;
It could also the understanding of history
Culture is constantly changing and can be lost as it changes in our minds
On the one hand it means intellectual and artistic activity, and, on the other, and more
broadly, it refers to a whole way of life, in both its material and spiritual dimensions.
Cultural Expression
Culture includes the arts: both the traditional and contemporary - and also a much
wider range of human, physical, intellectual and spiritual activities, experiences, and
forms
The cultural life of a community is not about a few people going to the opera. It is
about participation, celebration, identity, belonging in a community and having a
sense of place
The arts can be understood as mediums used to express culture, as well as the
artefacts produced by and therefore representational of a culture
Multilateral issues of cultural policy
Many of governments are faced with compelling issues when designing cultural
tourism products. Some of the main issues faced are: language, cultural, science,
politics, religion, society
Cultural Tourism
In the 1900s thought of as a niche activity that better educated, more affluent
tourists that wished to experience something different from the norm
Culture is now seen as a distinguishable product for certain destinations that provides
great revenue from a variety of tourists
Destinations are using a community's diverse tangible and intangible cultural assets to
provide a unique experience for tourists
Cultural tourism as a strategy is required for a destination to maximise potential
tourism whilst at the same time maintaining cultural resources
Whilst destination marketing organisations (DMOs) will try to increase the tourism
numbers/expenditure, at the same time they need to be careful not to negatively
impact residents and the usage of land and customs
"a form of tourism that relies on a destination's cultural heritage assess and transform
them into products that can be consumed by tourists"
This course will define cultural tourism through the application of four elements:
1. Tourism
Cultural tourism is a form of tourism and not a form of cultural management.
Tourism is a noun and culture is an adjective. People need to travel for tourist
reasons to be classed as tourism
2. Use of cultural assets (tangible & intangible)
