Lecture 7 clinical issues in sports psychology. What is psychopathology: psychopathology is a population concern, dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning, distress or disability in social, occupatio(cid:374)al, or other i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)t activities . Psychopathology in athletes: diverse range of conditions present in athletes, those highlighted in treatment settings, anxiety and stress disorders, depressive disorders, eating disorders - class of disorders with shared but idiosyncratic features. Eating disorders: vulnerability for athletes: participation in sports where weight and shape are salient, divergence around body change strategies: more likely to engage in physical activity and dieting or fasting less often extreme behaviours. Two key impacts in eating disorders are relevant to our discussion: the way we eat impacts our eating, the environment we live in impacts our eating and exercise behaviours. Unique pressures for athletes: lose weight to improve performance, uniforms, sport-specific body ideals, performance-based acceptance, pursuit of perfection ignore pain/discomfort body comparison.
