o24/7 response in emergency services and military
oRosters 10/14, 12hours, triple 8s
- Deployments interstate/overseas (24hour cycles)
o14 days – 14 hour shifts (wildland firefighters)
o14 days – 12 hour shifts (urban search and rescue)
o14 days – 12 hour shifts (medical deployments – AUSMATS)
The issues
- The bulk of non trauma firefighter injury and fatalities occur worldwide as cardiac events
oDue to underlying preventable risk factors including obesity and hypertension
oDuring emergency responses
oOvernight following work in the heat
- Due to both the work environment and clothing configurations firefighters are predisposed
to heat illness if not managed
Physical conditioning
- No professional urban fire service in Australia conducts any ongoing physical standards
testing
- This is the same for police officers
- Aerobic fitness
oMin requirement is 42ml.kg or 4.0L.min VO2
oPre recruitment testing is beep test with a minimum standard of 9.6 which equates
to 45ml.kg.min
