Hi im Gemma I will be your student physiotherapist for today.
Today we are looking at your lung volumes using a spirometer. Have you ever used a
spirometer before?
A spirometer measure the amount of air moving out of the lungs or how much air you are
expiring. It is quite a physically demanding examination and will require at least 3 trials to
get the best result.
Because it is a maximal test you might experience any of the following symptoms
- Pain
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Wheeziness
If you do please let me know immediately and we will stop.
Did you understand all of that? Do you have any Questions? Are you right to continue?
I will now show you a demonstration of what you will be doing.
1. You will place your spret into the spirometer by lining up the triangles, push it in
as hard as you can
2. Place nose peg on to stop air escaping out your nose
3. Sit up nice and straight, feet on the ground
4. One deep breath in
5. Then bring the spirometer up to your mouth, seal your lips around the spret
6. Then blow out as hard and fast as you can
7. And then keep blowing for 6 seconds at least and it will feel a bit like there is no
air left but try to keep going.
8. Then we will have a rest
Now I will demonstrate.
It is quite physically demanding as you can see.
Do you understand? DO you have any questions, I will help with the steps as you go? Are
you right to continue?
Ill just get some details off you first of all to achieve the most accurate measure:
- Age (DOB)…
Remember those signs and let me know if you feel dizzy, pain, wheeziness or shortness of
breath ok?
