Introduction to ultrasound
Objectives = sonography, terminology
Objective 1 - Sonography / sonography
There are sonographers that specialise in areas
2 categories = general sonographer (can do all sonographers except for cardiac) – does everything
Cardiac sonographer (shouldn’t do general sonography, must specialise)
Who else can use sonography?
Therapeutic ultrasound
Physiotherapists
Chiropractors
Massage Therapists
GPs
3 main benefits
Reduce swelling and oedema (reduces pain)
Increases blood flow to area (promotes healing)
Phonophoresis (administering medication)
Others who can use sonography
Emergency Department Doctors – FAST Scans ( Focused Assessment with Sonography for
Trauma ) – use to find any free fluid in the abdomen of the person ( a quick survey on their
condition)
Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma is a limited ultrasound examination
directed solely at identifying the presence of free intraperitoneal or pericardial fluid.
In the context of traumatic injury, free fluid is usually due to haemorrhage and contributes
to the assessment of the circulation.
Midwives
Veterinarians
Specialist medical doctors- eg. vascular surgeons

Who can be a sonographer?
Where a medical practitioner has a sonographer perform an ultrasound examination on
their behalf and receives a Medicare benefit for that service, the sonographer must be on
the Register of Accredited Sonographers or Student Sonographers as administered by the
ASAR Ltd (ASAR).
No AHPRA – MRPBA Registration, so no ‘protected’ title- ultrasounds (sonography) isn’t
apart of AHPRA
No regulation, other than professional body requirements (ASA, ASUM, CSANZ, ASMIRT) and
ASAR requirements- don’t have to be registered very year and pay registration and continue
with professional development
Currently ~ 7000 AMS and ASS
Professional support
ASA
Australian Sonographers Association
ASUM
Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine
ASMIRT
Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy
CSANZ
Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand
Occupational demand
The ageing of the Australian population and increased technology and equipment available
for diagnoses appear to have contributed to strong demand for imaging services.
Labour marketing demand
Labour market rating: Shortage of sonographers
‘There is no evidence to suggest the labour market for sonographers will change significantly
over the next six months’.
Top 5 occupations in demand
Sonographers have been on this list for the last five years (Seek Employment Index 2008)
Also, the occupations in demand for immigration has listed sonographers for many years
(MODL 2009)
