Marxism
Strengths: highlights inequity of distribution of resources, strong view of social transformation
Weaknesses: indoctrination and overemphasis on class
Philosophy of action to change the world to be a fairer place, especially the people at the
bottom
Theory that looks at society, says it’s not fair, tries to say why it’s not fair, comes up with
theoretical model to change things and what to do to change way of living (changing society
through economic structures)
Hegemony: social reproduction – replication of class structure, reproduce the very injustices and
normalise them; thus, continue on. Socially reproduced to think that the hegemony is normal,
these injustices are normal
Dialectical Materialism: combined a materialist interpretation with the dialectic
Terms:
oCommodification: turning anything into an object, treating it as a commodity
oFetishization: natural to measure the value of useful things with money, only things
have value is they are worth money
oAlienation: A job that doesn’t allow creativity means you are alienated
oCapitalism: system or ordering foods and services, also enshrines a way of thinking (it’s
hard not to be compliant)
Education is a fundamental to achieving a higher level of human development
Curriculum embodies dominant forms of culture
School isn’t where the change can occur, it must occur outside schools and schools will follow
The persistence of the pursuit of equality actually creates the grounds for more coercion
(standardised testing)
Not favourable to public education because of curriculum
