Developmental Psychology - Week 6 - Tutorial 6 - NAPLAN
Relational
Positives:
- Allows parents to ‘get a bearing’ on where their child is at on the level of education and what their chid
is capable of achieving
- “Children deserve the best possible education the system can provide - and a public education system
that is genuinely responsive to its community, that is prepared to listen to inputs from outside, and that is
prepared to prioritise quality, is an education system that more people can have confidence in”
Negatives:
- May diminish opportunities if literacy and numeracy are not up to standards
- Proving stressful for parents too
- Burden on teachers, an impost on student organisations, and a vehicle which has created too much
emotional stress for a significant number of young students
Individual
Positives:
- When released in 2008, its aim was to provide a national snapshot of student progress
- Can identify levels of educational need in specific areas
- NAPLAN can track the individual student’s development through the years
Negatives:
- Can create anxiety - Lowered levels of sleep
- Significant minority - levels of stress are beyond the norm - vomiting, sleeplessness, anxiety and
migraines
- At the current time,a high percentage of 15 year olds are achieving only minimal levels of reading and
mathematical
Collective
Positives:
- Allows schools to compare their performance against other schools
- Sales of NAPLAN and educational products doubled from 2012-2013
- Gives teachers an external reference point
- Can assess the impact and effectiveness of national and system wide literacy and numeracy programs
and initiatives
Negatives:
- Pressure placed on the children by the teachers (from video) - Child says that the teachers say that if
they children don't do well on NAPLAN, they wont get a good education or do well in school, therefore
they cant get good jobs
- Government are using NAPLAN results to compare children to get into high school
- New report declares NAPLAN a failed reform - has had a series of unintended consequences
- Since the sale of products doubled, it is symptomatic of the high stakes that are associated with
NAPLAN
Results of the 2008 tests indicated that Indigenous children in remote communities had the lowest test
scores, and results were used to make a policy decision that effectively scrapped bilingual education in the
Northern Territory
