Spelling Vocabulary
- Initial Sound
The first sound in a group/syllable
- Final Sound
The last sound in a group/syllable
- Medial Sound
The middle sound/s in a group/syllable (Can have more than one)
- Rime
The vowel and any following consonants of a syllable; for example ‘ook’ in ‘book’ - ‘ook’ can be
preceded by other letters such as ‘l’, ‘h’ or ‘ch’ - ‘ook’
- Onset
The part of a syllable preceding the syllable nucleus; normally the consonant preceding the vowel of
a syllable as ‘str’ in ‘strip’. Compare with rime.
- Blend
Put sounds together to create words - blending sounds - moving from individual sounds to one sound
- Segment
Separating words into individual sounds
Morphemic Spelling Strategies
1. Morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in words
2. Understanding how to split words into morphemes gives clues to a word’s spelling
3. Words with the same meaning base have similar spelling
Suffixes to Show Plurality
1. Find words that are pluralised in a children’s book
2. Sort into the different spellings of the plural
3. e.g. ‘s’, ‘es’, and whole word changes

- Find words with the suffix -er or -est (or that can have have these suffixes added to them)
- How does each of these suffixes change the meaning of the base word?
- ‘er’ - comparison
- ‘est’ - Comparative to a superlative degree
