Introduction to Inclusion
Difference/Diversity
- All teachers will have a diverse classroom.
- Students with different cultural, religious, social, family and ability levels will be part of the inclusive
setting.
- In the last few decades attitudes towards diversity have moved to become more accepting of others.
This includes people with disability.
- Education and acceptance in the community are considered to be rights (not privileges) for people with
disability.
Inclusion in the classroom
- Introduce ideas of inclusion and acceptance of difference in the classroom - Happy feet
- Get them thinking bout it - are we all different? Or are we all the same?
Disabilities, Multicultural, same sex parents, single parents?
- Encompass all the differences - culture, race, religion, and gender
- By singling out a child - at the back of the room with an EA - this is integration, not inclusion
Inclusion
- Inclusion has been described as “sharing”, “belonging”, everyone in together” and nobody segregated
in society”
- Inclusion is a psycho/social construct.
- Society as a whole - Belonging
- A definition
“Inclusivity is a way of life, a way of living together; based on a belief that each individual is valued
and does belong” (Villa et al., 1995, p. 279).
- Another Definition
Inclusion is the act of engaging people with disabilities in all daily activities at school, at work, at
home and in the community (Inclusion Network, 2006)
Inclusive Education
- Children or youth, with or without disabilities, learning together with appropriate support
- All students participate fully in the life/work of the classroom.
- This may mean different ways of supporting different students.
- Different to integration and mainstreaming.
- Rights based philosophy.
- Full Inclusion - no matter what the disability - everyone should be included - different views upon this
- Equality - Everyone gets the same
- Equity - everyone reaches the same
Inclusive Classroom
- Different for different activities/students
- Students are actively engaged
- Students can make some choices
- Learning is often in small groups/collaborative
- Social interaction is also important
- Student centred
- Students have responsibility for creating the classroom environment
- All students are accepted and catered for
- Be open to what your classroom requires
