What is assessment?
o Assessment is the process of gathering and interpreting evidence to make judgements about student
learning.
o Assessment is the process of gathering and interpreting evidence to make judgements about student
learning. It is the crucial link between learning outcomes, content and teaching and learning activities.
Assessment is used by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are at in their learning,
where they need to go, and how best to get there. The purpose of assessment is to improve learning,
inform teaching, help students achieve the highest standards they can and provide meaningful reports on
students’ achievement.

What to Assess?
o Outcomes & Objectives of lessons

o Major child growth and development domains

o Expected outcomes of the program for individual child, group or class
to determine how effective a program has been.
o Problems or concerns about a particular child or group

When to Assess?
o Initial assessment
occurs when a new group, or a new child begins a section of the curriculum.
It yields information on a child’s or the group’s initial status (knowledge or skill) – ability prior
knowledge and understanding. This initial reading or understanding should be done as soon as
possible.
o Interim assessments
Usually done halfway, to allow for mid course corrections.
o Final assessment (Summative Assessment)
is done toward the end of a group’s time with a particular teacher or teachers.
Types of Assessment
o Diagnostic Assessment Before
