ED3662 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Australian Curriculum, Smart Criteria
Tutorial Three: Area and Time
Objectives
- These indicate the anticipated outcomes of the lesson and are the observable behaviours which
indicate that learning has occurred.
- The lesson objectives should be written in point form, beginning with a verb and will be evaluated
at the end of the lesson
SMART Objectives
- S – Specific
- M – Measureable
o Can you as the teacher determine if the objective is achieved?
o Use accurate verbs
- A – Attainable
o Achievable
- R – Realistic
o Real life application
- T – Time Appropriate
Assessment
- Assessment is directly to the objectives, if you can’t assess it, then the objective needs to be re-
visited
o How will I know if/what the students have learned?
o Is it telling me some useful for further teacher/learning?
Time
- The three key aspects to teaching time (Siemon, Beswick, Brady, Clark, Faragher, and
Warren (2015)
o write that there are three key aspects in developing an understanding of time
o These are:
▪ Understanding the concept of time duration
▪ Appreciating the passing and sequence of time
▪ Determining a given point in time through the reading of a clock face (p.
471).
o Of these three key aspects it seems the one that gets most attention in schools
and in the Australian Curriculum (ACARA, 2017) is the reading of clock faces
Reading Three: Measurement Concepts and Strategies
Extending Measurement Concepts
- F-4
o Students begin to explore the meaning and process of measurement
o Non standard units
▪ Paper clips
▪ Hand spans
o Develop an appreciation of the need for standard units
- 5-9
