Psychological Principles of Classroom Management - Lecture 3 - Week 3
Preparation and Prevention
What is your biggest concern as a pre-service teacher?
-Develop an orderly learning environment so that students can engage in meaningful activities
Be Prepared:
-Make sure you have clear objectives of what you want the students to achieve
-Also, a clear plan of how you are going to achieve your objectives
-Fun, interesting, interactive lesson activities
-Materials organised and ready to go (includes IT equipment)
-A back up plan in case things go awry
-Activities/strategies to cater for lower achievers
-Early finisher resources/activities
-Strategies to assess student performances
-Never plan to do anything you wouldn't do yourself
-If you find it boring then so will the children
The Number One thing that can go wrong:
-Anything that relies on technology
Creating an orderly environment
-Prevention
-Start with AITSL Standard #1
-“Know your students and how they learn”
-Make that connection with as many students as you can as soon as you can
At the Start of the Year (PRAC)
-Provide students with a caring and welcoming (and clean) classroom
-Consider classroom layout (inc. desk arrangement)
-Consider resources available to students
-Provide high and specific expectations
-Develop rules (together with students), routines and procedures
-Be friendly to students but not their friend
-Share a little (not too much) of yourself
-Do your homework on students by speaking to previous teachers
During Lessons
-Greet students as they enter the room
-Develop “CUES” to begin your lesson e.g. “Macaroni Cheese…”(variety)
-Manage student movement e.g. group leaders only to collect materials
-Display Kounin’s principle of “With-it-ness”
-Acknowledge appropriate behaviour (don’t just focus on inappropriate stuff- that’s called
“nagging”)
-Provide opportunities for “managed chat” e.g. “think, pair, share”
-Connect with students – ask questions to get to know them
-Clear instructions – check for clarity
-Appropriate time allocation for tasks
