HUS1108 - INTRODUCTION TO JOINTS, MUSCLE AND NERVES
LEARNING OBJECTIVES - JOINTS
• Classify joints according to their structure.
• Defie ligaet ad tedo
• Describe the three types of cartilage and their function.
• Describe the general features of fibrous and cartilaginous joints with examples of each.
• Describe the general features of a synovial joint.
• List the types of synovial joints according to the shape of their surfaces (six types), as well as
the types of movement they produce.
• Discuss the factors involved in joint stability.
Types of Joints:
• Solid joints
o Immovable
o No cavity between bones
o Joined by connective tissue
• Synovial joint
o Freely moving
o Articular cavity
LEARNING OBJECTIVES - MUSCLES
• Identify and distinguish between the three types of muscle tissue.
• Describe the structure of skeletal muscle.
• Name the common patterns of muscle fascicle arrangement
and give examples of each.
• Define innervation, and describe how nerves are formed
• Define the terms origin, insertion, agonist (prime mover), antagonist and synergist.
Types of Muscle
• Skeletal muscle: attaches to and covers the skeleton
o Striated (long muscle cells)
o Voluntary actions (conscious control)
o Rapid contractions, easily fatigued
• Cardiac muscle: only exists in heart
o Striated
o Involuntary
• Smooth muscle: present in the walls of hollow organs (i.e stomach, intestines, trachea)
o Non-striated
o Involuntary
o Slow and sustained contractions
Structure of Skeletal Muscle
• Muscle
o Individual muscle cells, blood vessels, nerves
o Wrapped in epimysium
• Fascicle (inside the muscle belly)
o A portion of the muscle
o Bundle of individual muscle cells
